Willy, a Schwinn Classic downtown steel frame, went out looking for his female companion. He preferred to find a bike with female touches... low step-through, elegant colors, and a sparkling personality. He hoped that she would have a comfortable saddle for those long rides around town, and a nice rack to hold all of the goodies their owners would purchase. Lastly, he wanted a full fender set for those rainy Florida afternoons.

As luck would have it... he found Jenny!

The two are a match made in heaven.

It will be a casual group ride leaving from the Ross Prairie Trailhead at 9 am, you are welcome to ride any distance you like but we will have water stations set up at 49th Trailhead and the Landbridge Trailhead. XTERRA in Charlotte July 9-10

Looking for a way to beat the heat? How about an Xterra race in Charlotte, NC?

We are right at 3 weeks away from the XTERRA Whitewater weekend (July 9th & 10th). The weekend features both an off-road triathlons and trail running events on the beautiful trails along the Cawtaba River and hosted at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Last year, 275 runners and triathletes representing 15 states joined in on the fun.

Races include Saturday's XTERRA North Carolina Whitewater 8.25 / 3.5 Mile Trail Run is race number one of a three-race XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series. Remember, you can run in as many or as few of the events as you would like, but if you are trying to qualify for series points... the more you run... the more you get!

Sunday is the XTERRA Whitewater Off-road Triathlon which includes a half-mile, two-part swim (which includes both the Cawtaba River and the US National Whitewater Center man-made pond), 16.5 mile mountain bike and 5 mile trail run through some challenging, technical, rough-n-tough, single-track trails.

Can't decide which to do? Race both the 8.25 mile trail run and the triathlon to qualify for the Weekend Warrior award!

"Ride the Divide" Award-Winning Documentary Film Coming to Ocala April 26

Ride The Divide, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, will descend on Ocala on Tuesday, April 26 at the Marion Theater. The event will be a fundraiser for the Ocala Mountain Bike Association.

The film chronicles the story of several mountain bikers who attempt the 2,711-mile race named the Tour Divide along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. The movie was named the best adventure film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.

This film has become an instant cycling classic, and made its television premiere in September on the Documentary Channel. But the Adventure Cycling Association said the film should be seen on the big screen: “The cinematography is stunning!” Added UpaDowna, “Ride The Divide is one of the most inspiring real cycling movies … in a long time.” Epic Riding summed the movie up as follows: “In a word? Fantastic. In more words? Moving, funny, inspiring.”

Ride The Divide embraces the inspiring stories of three of the racers who experience the immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada, to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. There’s Mike, a 40-year-old family man who uses this challenge to chart a new course in life; Matthew, a leader in extreme endurance racing who’s competing for his fifth time; and Mary, the ﬁrst female rider to race this route. As they set out, they will attempt to accomplish what very few have been able to. Over the course of a few weeks, they’ll attempt to climb over 200,000 vertical feet along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains.

They’ll experience mental breakdowns, treacherous snow, hellacious blisters, and total fatigue. Above all, they’ll race with no support – at times in total isolation. The tests of endurance and the accomplished moments throughout Ride the Divide prompt us to reﬂect on our inner desires to live life to the fullest.

Ride The Divide made its debut at the Vail Film Festival and was named the best adventure film at the event. Outside Magazine proclaimed that “(t)he toughest bike race in the world is not in France,” after reviewing the film.

Racer report for Santos Trail to Trail race – Sunday, October 17, 2010

The Santos Trail-to-Trail race was brought to you by Red Trail Racing out of Tampa. The Trail-to-Trail race has been around for several years, but this was the first time they used the Santos Trailhead side, where there are about seven miles of red trails – known to many as “Red Death.” The weather was perfect. The trails were perfect. Thank you to all of the volunteers and OMBA, especially Dave Stewart, who is a one-man trail trimming machine. If you see this man, please thank him.

The first thing I want to say is thank you to Greenway Bicycles/Retro City Cycles for all of their support in my racing adventures. Since I started working at Greenway Bicycles, I have been able to ride the Santos trails everyday, and I started a Wednesday Night Series that went through the summer; those with lights still continue to meet every Wednesday at 6 pm. Thank you Dano, Jessica, Kevin, Joey Pearce, my mechanic - you guys have true passion for Mountain Biking. Thank you to the rest of my support team: Dana Harries, my awesome wife; Kaitlin Harries, the true star of the family; Nightwatch Services, Los Alacranes Mexican Restaurant, Kay’s Mini Lane Farm.

Back to the race: I entered the all-mountain class, I ride my MTB 100% of the time, and also saw that this class had a cash payout, so I really wanted to do well. When we started lining up, I looked around to see many familiar faces, and also to see who was riding what class. I lined up next to Regan Woodall, who was also racing the all-mountain class, so I knew this was going to be a tough race! We have had the pleasure of racing together in the Hammerhead 100 – 25 mile race.

From the start, my goal was to keep the Woodall brothers in sight for as long as possible. I was fourth into the woods behind Ryan, Regan, and John Murry. My teammate, Evan Stalzer, who was also racing all-mountain solo, was 5^th behind me. I had some bike trouble and lost about 10 places on the first lap, but recovered and was able to pass quite a few riders. When I came out of the woods, I was still in good podium position. We hit the road for three 11-mile laps, I hammered from the start and drafted off of every roadie I could during the first lap. Right at the finish of the first lap, I was caught by another mountain biker, Russell Peelman. We caught up to Steve, from the Brick City Team, and the three of us worked together the entire second lap. During the third lap, Russell and I let Steve pull for a majority of the lap, and I also received some help from fellow teammate, Dave Dodd, who was racing as a team with Dano Kinnee.

Going back into the woods, I was in 2^ndplace, Regan Woodall was over 20 minutes ahead of me, but Russell was only one second behind me. I could see that 2^nd place money in my head, so I put the hammer down and Russell stayed with me until the top of Magic Mountain. That is where I attacked the down side and hammered Rattlesnake Ridge. I was able to break away and secure the 2^nd place win! What an honor to stand on the podium with those men. Congrats to Regan and Russell, as well as my teammates Dave and Dano, who placed 3^rd in the team race. Congrats to everyone who participated, it was a fun, but tough, race!

Red Trail Racing did an excellent job, thank you all, and I look forward to doing more of your races. Thanks Florida Racing Magazine, you guys rock!

Please join us for the annual IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day!

The day will start with a round of introductions and a short bike safety review. We will review rules of the trail, do quick safety checks on kids (helmets, etc), and their bikes, and give a quick course on bikes and their components and what to check before riding.

We will show the kids general mountain biking skills on the pump track, and then split into groups ...and take them on a ride!

We will head back to the pavilion to finish up the day with a cookout, free food and drink for everyone thank to OMBA! (Rumor has it Donnie will be showing his skillz on the grillz).

Many thanks to Donnie for turning our Wednesday Night Summer Series into a HUGE success! Let's celebrate tomorrow night with our usual rides departing at 6:30 pm (yellow, blue, red) kids and the cookout will start at 5 pm. Special thanks to the Office of Greenways and Trails for donating some great raffle prizes, including an all-inclusive overnight stay at the Santos Trailhead Campground!
